Carmen Blais joined members of Lakehead Rotary to share more about the work of the Matawa Health Co-operative and the growing impact it continues to have across Northwestern Ontario.

Speaking to the challenges many remote and Indigenous communities face in accessing health care, Carmen explained that the cooperative was created to help provide more connected, community-driven services. For many residents, accessing care can involve long travel distances, extended wait times, and navigating systems that are often difficult to coordinate. The Matawa Health Co-operative was developed to help close those gaps while ensuring communities have a stronger voice in how care is delivered.

Carmen spoke about the range of services offered through the cooperative, including primary care support, mental health and addictions programming, chronic disease management, patient advocacy, and care coordination. She also emphasized the importance of culturally respectful care and building services around the needs of the people and communities being served.  Throughout the presentation, the focus remained on the people behind the programs. Carmen shared how improved access to care can make a meaningful difference for families, elders, and youth across the region, whether that means receiving support closer to home, connecting with services sooner, or reducing the stress that often comes with medical travel.

Her presentation offered Rotary members a better understanding of both the challenges and the progress taking place across Northwestern Ontario. More importantly, it highlighted the value of partnerships and community-led solutions in creating healthier, stronger communities throughout the North.
