This morning, Lakehead Rotary had the pleasure of welcoming Jackie Knough, Executive Director of Our Kids Count, and it was one of those presentations that stays with you long after the meeting is over.
It’s easy to look at an organization and see a list of programs and services. But listening to Jackie speak reminded us that behind every one of those programs is a real family. A parent who may be struggling and just needs someone in their corner. A child who needs a safe place to learn, play and simply be a kid. A family trying their very best, who sometimes just needs a little extra support to get through a difficult season.
Our Kids Count provides that support in so many ways, from parenting and family programs to food and nutrition initiatives, early learning opportunities, community kitchens and programs that help families build connections with one another. But perhaps what touched us most is the sense of belonging they work so hard to create. It isn’t simply about providing a service. It’s about welcoming people in, listening without judgement and reminding families that they don’t have to navigate everything alone.
And when you really think about it, supporting a child rarely stops with that one child. When we strengthen a parent, we strengthen a family. When we strengthen families, we create healthier neighbourhoods. And little by little, those ripples help build a stronger community for all of us.
Jackie, thank you for spending your morning with Lakehead Rotary, for sharing the stories behind the work, and for reminding us just how much heart exists within organizations like Our Kids Count. Thunder Bay is a better place because there are people who choose, every single day, to show up for its children and families. And we’re pretty grateful we had the opportunity to learn a little more about some of them this morning. ❤️
